What a missed call really costs a small business

A simple way to put a rupee value on unanswered calls, and three fixes that do not need a new hire.

Most owners know they miss calls. Very few know how many, or what they are worth. Here is a quick way to find out in one afternoon.

Step 1: Count the misses

Open your phone's call log, or your telephony dashboard, for the last 30 days. Count unanswered inbound calls from numbers that did not call back within an hour. For most SMEs we audit, this is between 15% and 40% of all calls.

Step 2: Put a value on one call

Take your average order value and your rough conversion rate from enquiry to sale. If an average job is ₹1.5 lakh and one in eight callers becomes a customer, each answered call is worth about ₹18,750 in revenue.

Step 3: Multiply

Forty missed calls a month at ₹18,750 is ₹7.5 lakh of revenue at risk every month. Even if only a quarter of those callers would have bought, that is close to ₹2 lakh a month.

Three fixes, from cheapest to most complete

  1. Call forwarding to a second person during busy hours. Free, but it only moves the problem.
  2. An instant WhatsApp reply to every missed call, with a link to book a callback. Cheap and surprisingly effective.
  3. A voice agent that answers, qualifies and books, then sends your team a summary. The only option that works at 9 pm on a Sunday.
