WhatsApp Business app vs the API: what an SME actually needs

When the free app is enough, when you need the official API, and what it costs in plain numbers.

Busy indoor market lane with clothing shops on both sides

Almost every Indian business already uses WhatsApp. The question is whether the free Business app is enough, or whether you need the official WhatsApp Business API.

The free app is enough when

  • One or two people reply to all chats.
  • You get fewer than 30 to 40 new chats a day.
  • You do not need automatic replies beyond a greeting and away message.

You need the API when

  • Several people need to reply from one number.
  • You want a chatbot to answer FAQs, capture leads or take orders.
  • You want to send reminders and offers to customers who opted in.
  • You want chats to flow into a CRM.

What it costs

Meta charges per conversation, with rates that differ for marketing, utility and service messages. A business with 1,500 conversations a month typically pays a few thousand rupees in Meta fees, plus the cost of the platform and setup.

How these fees are covered is set out in your plan, so you know the monthly number in advance. We are not a BSP ourselves: we set up the API through a Meta Business Solution Provider partner, on a number and Meta Business account you own.

One rule that matters

Only message people who opted in, and make it easy to opt out. It keeps your number healthy and your customers happy.
